Sync Desktop: A Workspace With Integrated PC and Fold-Away Monitor

Besides being absolutely beautiful, this Sync Desktop concept from designer Gareth Battensby features a fold-away widescreen monitor and keyboard, a built in USB hub, scanner, mouse, webcam, easy-to-access DVD unit, and plenty of storage space. And because it is all seamlessly integrated into the design, the Sync can be converted into a standard desk for other projects whenever necessary. The only problem is that I doubt that it could ever become a commercial product unless there was a way to upgrade the hardware. [Gareth Battensby via Born Rich]

  • But does it fold away with the keyboard in place?

  • looks like one spilled coffee from a really bad day to me

  • Looks like a glass, haptic keyboard would tuck away nicer than that dinosaur model.

  • I don't know ... looks fake to me.. :P

  • Someone can just build a desk that shiny with the right side cabinet for a desktop with connectors for monitor/USB/whatever. Upgradeable hardware, done.

  • That looks like it came from the bridge of the U.S.S. Enterprise, and I want. ANd why would it not upgradable through theoretical latches and doors on the underside of the unit.

  • ALSO, the right side of the desk could be the tower itself... that would be sexay.

  • So I have to wipe out my desk each time before I can use the software.

Results in one big ass computer with a drawer.

It's very pretty but looks like it would collect way too much dust and finger prints. That would drive me nuts.

  • This is really slick, but yeah the fingerprints would make me murder.

  • If you click the link you will find this tidbit of information

"The "tower" storage unit for example supports all motherboard sizes, allows adequate cooling and is easily accessable for maintanence."

So it is upgradable. And the other pictures there show it with the keyboard inside the desk with the monitor flat. Looks pretty cool to me other than the dust magnet problem.

  • ATTN Gizmodo: That right part of the desk = tower. In theory, this would be a stupidly simple project. It would use gas struts for the monitor instead of hinges though.

  • Looks cool. I would want one, but I don't think I could keep my desk clean enough to be able to open/close the monitor whenever I needed to. Maybe if the desk were a little bigger or the monitor just sank straight down into the desk instead of folding...that would be awesome.

@Ninja_of_Techno: I bought me an awesome desk from IKEA, it was SO clean the first week and then I just ppiled and piled shit on top of it. I just cleaned it yesterday but I'm afraid no desk is safe with me. I would feel horrible having that thing b.c i'd probably never take good care of the surface, lol.

  • thats pretty cool.

  • Neat idea but shiny things are for cats and retards. Flat black, lose the silver and make it so you can build the computer somewhere other than on the floor (will take more than a removable motherboard tray). Also, completely redesign it. TIA.

Or just throw a Lian-Li under a beautiful maple Room & Board Portica and don't be embarrassed when you have company. Hi.

Nice looking, but I spill water or soda on my desk like once a month. That would not go well with the built in electronics in this unit.

  • I liked TRON too, but remember the guy with that desk did 'not' win.

Also, curved glossy edges are like sex on satin, everything ends up on the floor eventually.

  • Make the black an Matte finish, make the tower removable but like in a steel frame with all the guts popping out and have the keyboard slide on the side of the desk and make the screen slide down instead of fold down, i am very rough with laptops, imagine a 30' in screen?

  • "So far we've received one order from a guy named Dillinger..."

  • My laptop does the exact same thing

  • It's clearly not a "fold-away" display, since the area in front of the monitor remains flush with the sides in both pictures, obviously the monitor comes equipped with a flux capacitor and combustion engine and merely travels to a random destination in time while not in use. Duh.

  • wasent there a British sitcom with something like that?

    @leMel: Good Tron refrence.

  • And it's running Ubuntu. How friggin sweet is that?

  • @Red Right Hand: I was thinking the same

  • Looks cool but I think I'd be too liable to break that.

  • I actually love the concept. Of course it could be a bit more practical but at least someone put it out there.

All the time you see these lovely cool things on a gadget website (you have to play them off against each other!), then you read the description and it says "concept"! All the neat stuff is concept. They should really just make it happen.

  • My Grandmother had a sewing machine that looked like that...

Looks like something Zorg's secretary would be sitting at.

You know, when that call from "Mr. Shadow" comes in...

@Superevil: I noticed that too. I was looking ad thinking "is that Linux?" I don't know how useful I would find something like this. I would rather have a makeshift desk where I set my screen up myself, but it seems to be a pretty cool concept.

  • My last computer desk was like this, less shiny of course, but when the desk started to wobble I noticed the supports were just a bit shorter then my tower, so I spent a weekend taking it apart, bolted the tower to the bottom, then dropped 3 flat head sheet metal screws through the top. I had a spare case around that was the twin of my main case, so I installed it on the other side in the hopes of running duel systems (never did, but both were hooked up for the look of their power lights)

Now if I could have this but have the monitor SLIDE up from the back, instead of flip up from the workspace of the desk, I might go for it.

  • It's obvious from the pics that the screen couldn't fold forward. It appears that it is intended to fold backward and then slide into the desk surface face up.

  • First off I doubt anyone would build a computer product without being able to upgrade it. In this day and age where we need to upgrade our software every 2 or 3 years and purchases a totally new computer every 5 years I highly doubt that this cant be upgraded. Hell you could even leave it hallow so you can shove your own tower in there.

Apple needs to aquire the rights to this immediately! I doubt I would buy this product unless it built with an apple computer

  • I think this might be a bit to neat for many average consumers.

Now have this from a business standpoint...for advertising, marketing, just maybe to browse the companies goals and abilities/FAQ's/stuff of a similar nature...but to make all that cool enough to buy a desk over, i'd think it would have to have a touchscreen, to be better-dual displayed so when closed, the desktop itself is a moniter. and to make it on some sort of swivel so you could have all gather round in desktop mode or turn it around for all to see in upride dualy-sided moniter mode.

kill mode and self-destruct mode also suggested.

@strider_mt2k: You just made me watch The 5th Element again. GREEN!

  • It's a pretty nice concept and by the looks of it the tower looks like it makes up the right leg, you could just have a panel then if you wanted to upgrade just pop the tower open and change it out, just make sure it fits the standard atx types like any other tower, throw in a panel on the back then you can change out video cards and you won't have trouble trying to go through some outrageous process to make your new components work with all all the peripherals in the desk.

  • also just put a little lever in to control the keyboard height then you could lower it when you want to close the monitor

  • Huh. I destroyed an assload of these in Timesplitters III... I wonder if these are just as easy to hack as the ones in the game...
    *Holds down 'A' button*
"OMG LIEK AH GOTZ ALL YOR STUFF!!!"
    Yeah, no, I doubt it.

  • I cant remember the name of it but it was a British comedy that had a guy I think an accountant in a subway whipped out a chair and a little table from the side of the chair and just keps unfolding more and more stuff from it till he had a full sized desk and a laserjet off to the side with a full desktop computer on it too.

  • @ doobiebros22: If you look at the bottom right drawing on the artists page, the keyboard drops down & back on tracks when the display is folded.

  • Neat, but I think I'll wait for the mobile version.

  • Go ubuntu!!!

But this seems like something apple might do, and call it a MacDesk or something.

  • so so sexy...i want one...all there is to it..put a door on the back for harware upgrades and put it on the market

  • I think this concept is boring. Looks like a funeral home rather... This kind of concept only last for 2minute. No consideration to the user's height, comfort level or sustainability.

  • Image of Sora57 Sora57 at 11:56 PM on 05/17/08 *

@iPhony: If you click the link you will find that in fact the screen is designed to fold forward. I think you do have to move the keyboard out of the way first.
