Video Hands on With the 8.9-inch Asus Eee PC 900

Just days after becoming official, JKK Mobile has unveiled a short video hands on with the Asus Eee PC 900. It is not definitive by any means, although they were generally impressed. Specifically, they were happy with the larger size and increased resolution (1024 x 600) on the 8.9-inch screen. And the 1GB ram, 1.3 megapixel camera and 8GB SSD (up to 12GB) is definitely an improvement over the original. Available in mid April for 399 Euros ($607) with Linux [jkkmobile]

  • better, but not $160.00 better

  • That puts in the price range of HP's lifestyle toy ($630), and as far as we know that has a slighty higher screen resolution. We still don't know enough about the HP to compare yet, of course.

  • Not too shabby...

  • if they made it 500 i could see it but at that point you might as well get a light small laptop thatyou can run linux on but its still pretty cool

does best buy sell the asus eee pc

  • Interesting video. The video seems to say the speaker now is at the bottom of the case where it use to be the air vent.
Besides the larger screen, I really like the larger touch pad that I have not seen in any of those nanobooks by Via yet. I would really like to have bluetooth built in.
So far the 900 series is not that exciting.

  • €400? Sign me right up.

Screen resolution was the only reservation I had with the old EEE. That, and the right shift beside the up button, but I guess I can get used to that.

I'll have to nab me one of these.

  • That's nice, but the price now rises to a different level. After all, it's now 50% more than the 4G model.

  • Will probably be $599 in the states (but if it were somehow magically $499 it would be a steal and a half).

  • whats the proc speed on this one? I'm out if it's an underclocked celeron again.

Anybody want to buy a slightly used 701 4G? Seriously, the storage doesn't make that much of a difference, but this is the screen resolution that it should have come with in the first place....

  • i have a dell xps 1210 that i like a lot but i'm really dying for one of these little guys. but i haven't actually seen them showing up in person anywhere, and it's getting a little frustrating.

i think i'm just going to try and stop thinking about them maybe until the fall when they might actually be more widely available.

  • Price is gonna make or break it. I hope they are watching these blogs closely lol. At $599, as much as I REALLY want one, my sanity gene kicks in. I can easily buy a X32/X41 factory refurb 3yr warranty for same price +/0 shipping. Much to far over the pain threshold for me. I think the most they could muster and still have mass appeal is more like $450.

The masses are fickle. You don't wanna price yourself out of the market and be forced into competition in the wrong classes. You can price it at $599 USD and sell some, sure, but people will more than likely reach for used/discounted 4G models. Or you can pull an APPLE and give us the bigger better model for the same price...sellem like hotcakes.

They would be wise to discount the first gen models, and sell these puppies for the same $399, THEN my friend, you have a hit on your hands.

  • rip off. also, there should be a choice in OS

  • Before anyone comments on price again...I wanted to say, didn't anyone ever teach you not to use direct currency conversions when discussing prices? The price when it gets to the US will very likely be different.

  • @Stacky Botrus: The linux option is still there from what I have heard. As for your other comment read the one above this one.

  • @Stacky Botrus: See stopcrazypp's post, and isn't there a choice in OS? I mean, there's the linux the thing comes with, there's XP, and you can also go and use your own preference for Linux if you feel like it.

  • Same graphics chip and cpu?

  • I think Engadget said the 399€ version is for the 12GB SSD. If they can get the 8GB version to around $500-550, I'll probably pick one up as soon as it's released.

  • They are making progress, but storage is still an issue IMOHO and it is going to be a few years at least until SSD gets to be high capacity at a reasonable price.

Until SSD becomes more viable ASUS should try a separate model with a 40Gb HD and XP instead of SSD/Linux. I have a Vaio TR3 with similar weight/footprint/memory (but a 13" screen, XP, 40Gb HD, DVD) and the 2nd best thing about it other than the ultra portability is its double duty as a media player and I load up the drive all the time with HD TV and movies while I am on the road. With 12Gb you aren't going to have any space for media files.

Also, why not ship with an SD card slots like the XO? At least that allows for some storage expansion and data portability...

  • Make an 11" version and we've got a deal!

  • @Vagabum:
In the video, it looks like there are slots on the
right side, same as the older model.

  • I'm European, and I think you'll have this toy for 399$ in the US... and we'll have it for 399€. Although the euro has risen compared to the dollar (1€ = 1.5$), the prices stayed the same (1€ = 1$).

I'm not really seeing a market for these things much above $400.00 US

Well they gave me the screen I was asking for.

Now all I need is a model in black and the cash!

    Almost there! :D

  • Let's keep it under $500 there, boyos and I can finally ditch this 8 year old VAIO. Gracias.

  • My Economic Recovery check is going for one of these the day they're available. A perfect mini-laptop!

  • @Serolf Divad: Agreed.

They should have just jacked up the specs, but not the price. A similar business model that of Apple's.

  • @Ralph48:
    same here

  • Why oh why does the USD have to have devalued so badly that everyone is releasing prices in Euros now =(
Hopefully they cut us some slack and price similarly (numerically) for the US market.

On the bright side this inflation/devaluation is pretty good for me since I owe a crapload of money (med student loans ftw!).
