I love this. FINALLY!!!! My mortal enemy for years has been Outlook. For some reason Microsoft feels that your important reminders should be incredibly difficult to navigate. Now at least my Outlook Reminder window can be wide enough to view the entire reminder and the entire "due in" timeframe. Now if someone can figure out how to make it vertically scroll so I can see more than 9 reminders at once. M$, I hate you.

dukeofcrydee

After becoming accustomed to the window-dragging and resizing ways of Linux WMs in the past few months, I went on a small search for an equivalent way of doing things in Windows.

Here's what I stumbled upon: [www.autohotkey.com]).htm

This small script runs quietly in your system tray with its unmistakably ugly AHK icon, and does at least two important things:

1. Let's you drag ANY window the way it's done in Linux WMs: by pressing ALT and holding left click anywhere inside the window.
2. And it seems to do what this featured download does -- although, I warn you, I haven't tried ResizeEnable; I'm just judging from the article --: resize virtually any window, whether the application allows it or not, by pressing ALT and right-clicking anywhere in the window area. I had a lot of fun resizing dialog boxes and Windows configuration programs.

The thing that surprised me was how seamless it seemed to actually be. It's really all native Windows behavior, just activated by this small AHK script.

I didn't find sense in AHK before, but after seeing this small example, it can certainly be capable of replacing small apps such as ResizeEnable.

HTH,

I can tell you (as a programmer) this will not work for a majority of the programs that don't already support it.

Windows that are document/view style, where you can have multiple windows open (like Word) do this automatically because it's built in to the framework to do it. Dialogs (which look like forms, usually with a grayish brown background) require special code to make the contents shift or re-size. It's highly unlikely that the programmer would spend all the time needed to write code to resize a dialog and then forgot to set the check-box to enable resizing.

As for dialogs having controls "falling off the side" or clipping, thats always a result of the font and/or icon sizes being set to something besides the default values. If you tweak your default system font and/or change your icon display size, you're going to see this behavior, especially in older apps. The better solution is to just change your settings back to normal and let it be!

WoodyInNY

I just tried it with iTunes. On my 1024x768 XP machine, the Preferences dialog of iTunes doesn't show all of its contents (on most tabs, the buttons at the bottom are missing). ResizeEnable did _not_ help with this app.

As the author says in the accompanying Readme "It's a very ugly system hack." Not surprisingly, it doesn't work for everything. I'm glad for PERIODONTIST that s/he was able to get it to work for something.

And I second the finding that you can just fire this up when you need to resize a window, and then shut it down after resizing.

billyo

I just downloaded it and am fairly impressed. My mortal enemy window was Microsoft SQL Server Enterprise Manager Script Wizard which never gave enough space to see the full name of the objects you wanted to script. I was dubious that it would work -- I thought it would resize the window but the list boxes would stay the same size. But it works like a charm!

Another plus, although it resides in your system tray, there is no installation, so you can pretty much just launch it when needed and then kill it right afterwards.

periodontist
