Aside from the jiggly charms of the poorly-lit 70's exploitation staple Sandy Dempsey, "Connie & Floyd" reminds us that the good old days (of porn) weren't always good.

There is a reason that porn earned its reputation for horrible production values and lackluster directing. The 1973 film "Connie & Floyd," shot at the height of porno chic when production budgets were delivered via bags of cash in dark alleyways, is evidence that, even then, producers believed that people like you would buy anything as long as there was a cumshot in it.

And the fact that this 36-year-old parody of "Bonnie & Clyde" (released six years earlier) has been re-issued with a brand-new box featuring a different car and different costumes than were in the movie, suggests that there are still subscribers to that belief.

All righteous porn consumer anger aside, Sandy Dempsey, the toothy and wholesome star of several porns and sexploitation flicks in the early 70's, looks as good in this movie as anyone can hope to in a ridiculously poorly shot, oversaturated, almost unedited, unprofessionally recorded, trainwreck of a movie that seemed to end only when the cash ran out and not, as you would expect, in a hail of bullets.

There is a pasty orgy, some business with hillbillies, sex on a dirty mattress, and the one great line "Hey let's jig! Let's ball!" delivered several times by an uncredited actor who thought, correctly, that no one would remember it otherwise.

Fleshbot: Adult entertainment in 2009 looks a whole lot different than it did in 1999. In your opinion, what's been the single biggest change this decade?
Tristan Taormino: The internet, undoubtedly. It has changed who makes porn, how we watch porn, how we buy it (or don't), the costs associated with making it, and nearly everything about it, except for the naked people fucking.

You shot your first film about ten years ago. How has your work changed over the decade?
I learn something new with each movie I do, and I think my vision and mission has gotten clearer over these ten years. I'm much more invested in collaborating with the performers in my films, having them participate in the creation of their representation, and allowing them to express their sexuality in an ethical, positive, empowering environment.

How has the perception/acceptance of feminist porn changed over the decade? Is it more commonplace for porn/pornographers to be seen as feminist? Has self-identified feminist porn changed in content/tone?
I think that the Feminist Porn Awards, which celebrates its 5th anniversary in 2010, really helped spark a mainstream dialogue about feminist porn and also helped bring together a growing community of pornographers who identify themselves/their work as feminist. There certainly is more feminist porn now than ever before and it's gotten a lot more diverse, which I think is a good thing.

The internet has obviously had a huge impact on the adult industry. What's been the best change the internet has brought to the adult marketplace? The worst?
The best change is that amateurs and professionals can create their own websites, be 100% in control of the product and the profit. The worst is that pirating and illegal downloading are rampant and out of control. We are where the music industry was before they stopped Napster, but no one is going to step in to regulate porn pirating on the internet. I wish consumers realized that whenever they watch "free" porn that is copyrighted, it's like watching a mainstream movie without paying for it—you're taking money out of the filmmaker's pocket.

Has anything changed about the performers who work in the industry? Is a different kind of talent attracted nowadays?
The talent pool has grown to an almost overwhelming number of people. I think there is definitely more diversity among performers in terms of aesthetics, age, ethnicity—there are more women without any plastic surgery, flat-chested women, tattooed and pierced women, plus-size women, MILFs, and women of color working today than there were a decade ago.

Has public perception about the adult industry changed much since 2000? Is adult entertainment more accepted, less accepted, or about the same?
It's strange. There certainly has been more crossover between the adult industry and the mainstream entertainment industry, and I think porn is less taboo than it once was. But, that said, the people who make it (especially the performers) are still denigrated and stigmatized for the work they do. As a society, we are still so fucked up about how we see and treat porn performers—and sex workers in general.

Any thoughts on what the industry will look like at the end of the next decade?
It's hard not to see a bleak future considering what's going on right now in the economy and with illegally-pirated porn all over the internet. So, I'd like to offer my utopian vision for the next decade: 15-day STD testing (instead of 30), a decrease in STD rates among performers, no HIV outbreaks, Belladonna and I collaborating on a movie, more women and people of color in positions of power, The Feminist Porn Awards televised on a major network in primetime, and Buck Angel in the Senate.

Welcome back to the Fleshbot Book Club. Today we're featuring Fleshbot alumna Violet Blue's The Smart Girl's Guide to Porn. The following selection comes from Chapter 5: "Find the Right Porn for You."

Finding the DVD, streaming video, or porn site that turns you on and gets you off is no easy proposition, even if you already know what you want to see. Porn is a vast genre with many subgenres, full of its own language and customs, confusing labels, and misleading titles-plus a whole lot of bad grammar. What's worse, many retailers (online and off) treat their stock with carelessness or even distaste, cramming porn together with no discernable sense of order. Alphabetical order is not invited to the party, Dewy decimal has left the building. And each website seems to have its own organizational logic. It would make a librarian homicidal. Even a naughty one.

In a lot of ways, finding the right porn is much like seeking out a Hollywood movie-you're really on your own to find it. But in a genre of film that has no road map, you'll need to know not only what you want and where to find it, but also the different types of porn available.

Start by creating a picture of what you hope to find in your porn, just as you'd order a meal in a restaurant. What are you hungry for? Small breasts, big butts, women in charge, realistic plots, blow jobs, two gals and a guy, male anal penetration, rough sex? This may not be your menu, but you get the idea. The important thing is that you make a list of all the qualities you hope to find in an adult video. Then make a second list of things you don't want to see. Do you get turned off by fake breasts, hairy men, rimming, toe-sucking, facial ejaculation, two women together, or watching group sex? These are just examples to get you brainstorming about what you think will send you over the edge-and what you think you'll want to skip through. As you watch porn, you'll probably find more to add to (or subtract from) either list, because sometimes we find things that turn us on or off that we didn't even know about.

Rabbit Habit and Rabbit Pearl sales skyrocketed thanks to an appearance by the Rabbit Pearl on Sex and the City in 1998. Has American culture become more accepting of sex toys/masturbation over the past decade?
Absolutely! Sex toys may have had their coming out on Sex and the City, but [now they've] finally moved into the "cool to own one" realm. Stars like Eva Longoria, Madonna, the Beckhams, Rihanna and Britney have all been "caught" shopping or talking about sex toys. Mainstream magazines are much more likely to cover them—just this year, we appeared in a Time Magazine feature on eco-sexy toys. HBO has filmed Babeland three times, most recently during a ‘Kinky crafting' event.

By seeing images of sex toys reflected back by popular culture in ways that are not stereotypical or demeaning (until recently they could just be counted on as the butt of a joke), the rest of the population finally gets the message that there might be something they're missing out on!

What do you think the sex toy industry will look like in another ten years?
The industry itself will probably not change much, except that the big players will try to capitalize (as they always do) on the innovations of the cutting edge smaller players by introducing their own versions of luxury toys (without the quality). Consumers will finally start to become more brand savvy. It's no accident that Hitachi has been a top-seller for decades. Sure, it's a powerhouse, but it has a brand name for quality behind it, and the toy has always lived up to that. The marketing has just been missing good, reliable brands, and that's what Lelo, JimmyJane, Vibratex, and Fun Factory are delivering.

We'll definitely continue to see the high product sector roll out—with engraved, diamond encrusted vibrators being more available to the general population (at least the wealthy ones). Phthalate toys, which are still fairly common in typical adult stores, will be gone, thanks to the consumer-savviness of the buying population. And we're still waiting for a really good cyber-sex toy.
